‎'Cost Us 10 Goals This Season': Fans Target Van Dijk After Liverpool Collapse at Bournemouth

‎Liverpool’s trip to the south coast ended in frustration as Virgil van Dijk was blamed for the mistake that allowed Bournemouth to strike first in a pulsating 3-2 victory on Saturday night. The Reds skipper failed to deal with a long clearance, setting the tone for a turbulent evening.

‎The incident unfolded midway through the opening half when Bournemouth launched a hopeful ball forward. Van Dijk appeared well positioned to clear, but misjudged the bounce and missed the ball. Alex Scott reacted quickest, delivering a cross that Evanilson finished to hand the Cherries the early lead.
‎Further disruption followed shortly after. Joe Gomez clashed heavily with goalkeeper Alisson and was unable to continue. Although Wataru Endo was named as his replacement, the substitution was delayed, leaving Liverpool a man short as Alex Jimenez made it 2-0.
‎Jamie Redknapp later criticised the handling of the situation on Sky Sports, pointing out the lengthy wait to bring Endo on. He highlighted the risk of conceding while Liverpool played with ten men and questioned why the change was not made immediately after the collision.
‎Liverpool responded before the break when Van Dijk headed home to cut the deficit in half. Dominik Szoboszlai then drew the visitors level after the interval with a powerful free-kick, sparking hopes of a comeback.
‎Those hopes were dashed late on when Amine Adli scrambled in a decisive third goal, securing Bournemouth a dramatic win in front of their home supporters.
‎Although Van Dijk found the net, his earlier mistake dominated discussion online. Fans vented their anger on social media, accusing the defender of repeated errors this season and claiming his defending had cost Liverpool numerous goals.
‎Some criticised his casual approach, insisting he should clear danger more decisively. Others labelled him overrated and questioned his leadership, while a few argued his performances showed signs of decline at the highest level.
‎The defeat brought Liverpool’s 13-match unbeaten run to an end, a sequence that had stabilised their form after a shaky start under Arne Slot. Despite the setback, the Reds remain fourth in the league but face pressure from a cluster of challengers just behind them.
‎Manchester United, Chelsea, Brentford, and Newcastle are all within striking distance, meaning Liverpool’s position could change quickly depending on Sunday’s results.
‎In Europe, however, Liverpool continue to impress. They currently sit fourth in the Champions League standings and return to action midweek against Qarabag at Anfield.
‎A victory would guarantee a top-eight finish and secure automatic passage to the last 16, avoiding the play-off round. February promises to be demanding, with clashes against Newcastle, Manchester City, Sunderland, and Brighton on the calendar.
